Cheran’s
Maayakkannadi: Some reflections
and expectations!! |

|
Cheran
keeps churning out surprises by the
dozen. First of all, when everyone
thought he was a director, he gave
the memorable performance in Solla
Marandha Kadhai. Then he cast himself
as a hero in Autograph, which rocked
the box office. Then he proved that
he was not a one hit wonder when he
returned with the much appreciated
Thavamaai Thavamirindhu. Now, he is
at it again and he is experimenting
this time with Chennai as the backdrop.

Titled
Maayakkannadi, his new movie,
has Navya Nair playing the
lady lead. Why he chose Navya
when most of the leading ladies
of Tamil would have been willing
to work with him? Well, the
answer is quite simple; this
is not the first time that
they are working together.
They have recently worked
for an offbeat film called
Aadum Koothu which is reportedly
being touted as material good
enough for film festivals,
of course, there will be a
theatrical release after the
film finishes it’s round
of the festivals. This previous
experience of having worked
together might have prompted
Cheran to go for Navya.

Experiments
with looks
Cheran is said to have experimented
with his looks too. He is
all set to appear before the
audience as a typical fashion
conscious youth. Now, will
this suit Cheran? Knowing
the amount of care that he
takes into every detail of
a film, one can trust him
to look just right for this
character. The film is said
to be shaping out really well.
But the ride has not been
all that smooth for Cheran
who had been beset by problems
on and of the sets.

An
unwanted publicity
On location, it was the incident
involving Navya and a side
artiste Priya. A quarrel that
started over a silly matter
of cell phone usage and finally
ended in Cheran slapping the
side artiste to keep his heroine
happy. This created unwanted
publicity for the movie. But
as they say ‘ any publicity
is good publicity’.
But this incident was very
much avoidable, as Cheran
must have felt later.

Sleepless
nights
But this was just the smaller
of the issues that have been
haunting Cheran. Nisha, the
girl who had publicly accused
Cheran and director Thangar
Bacchan of cheating her with
false promises of film offers
and eventually raping her,
is in the news once again.
The issue had been lying low
for some time, but it seems
to have surfaced again and
this could be a serious headache
for Cheran and his associate.
The accusations true or false
are certainly giving Cheran
a few sleepless nights.

Yet,
positive vibes
We hope that this does not
reflect in his upcoming movie.
That apart, the movie seems
to be getting very positive
vibes from all around. Cheran
was the director who proved
with his films that there
is no such thing as a formula
and that good films will be
accepted by the audience,
irrespective of the starcast
or absence of songs and fights.
Hope that his success continues
in the same vein.

Maestro
is there…
The music of the movie is
sure to enchant, as it is
being done by none other than
Ilaiyaraja, who was reportedly
very impressed with the script.
Veteran Panchu Arunachalam’s
son Srinivasan is producing
the movie under the banner
of Chellamai Celluloid. Dwarakanath
handles the camera for the
movie.
All together a very impressive
team headed by a confident
leader. Success may just be
waiting to happen. All the
best.
