Clash
of the titans: Rajni vs Kamal
at the box-office!! |

It
is the biggest battle that the
tinsel town in the south can
think about. Forget about all
those petty rivalries, Vijay
vs. Ajith or Dhanush vs. Simbu
for instance. All those look
to be too trivial to be called
battles in the face of this
one. Maybe such a celebrated
clash has never been seen in
Indian cinema. It is the face
off between the highest paid
actor in the country and arguably
the moist versatile actor in
the country. In Tamil Nadu we
call it the clash between the
Mass and the Class. It is the
clash between Rajni and Kamal.

When
one says ‘clash’, don’t
picture a scene of the two men having
a go at each other through the media,
like some of the smaller stars tend
to do. We may have never seen a more
dignified rivalry. The two men show
so much respect for each other; after
all they have worked together in so
many movies. |
|
When
a movie starring any one of
them releases at the box office,
it is a time to rejoice for
the entire industry and all
movie lovers. What if, each
one of them releases a movie
simultaneously; needless to
say, it is the biggest festival
the industry can witness. The
two biggest draws at the box
office doing business at the
same time. Sometimes this is
seen as a somewhat bad idea.
It is because the simultaneous
release will surely cause minimal
losses to both the movies. So
it is best to release them separately.
But the excitement generated
due to a simultaneous release
can never be created by anything
else. |

There
were times when such a clash
used to be regularity. Almost
every festival season. Then
it became rare as Rajni brought
down the number of movies he
acted in. Then in 2005, it happened
again, Chandramukhi and Mumbai
Express met at the box office.
One must say that it was quite
a disappointment. It was a no
contest. Mumbai Express was
a dud and Chandramukhi was the
runaway winner.
Now, it is all set to happen
again in 2007. With superstar’s
Sivaji and universal hero’s
Dasavatharam set to release
for Tamil New year. |

|
This time one can be sure of a great
contest. Not only between the big
stars. It is also a clash of the two
top directors in Kollywood, Shankar
and K.S.Ravikumar and also between
two of the biggest production houses,
A.V.M and Oscar films. It is a three-pronged
contest. But there is one thing unique
to this contest. There need not be
just one winner; both the sides can
win if the movies live up to the expectations.
That is what the industry and all
Tamil movie lovers want. |
