Shooting
locations: Pondicherry Vs Madras !!

If you have seen movies like Sandai
Kozhi, Parijaatham, Kaakka Kaakka,
Mownam Paesiyadhe and Thambi, you
will find that most of the locations
in the film were from Pondicherry.
Why, even Vikram-Trisha starrer Bheema
too is now being canned at Pondicherry.
Yes, for the film makers, Pondicherry
was the destination when they wanted
to shoot outdoors.
|
|
|
Pondicherry offered good and undisturbed
location, the ECR road, the buildings
that had that quaint French good looks
and above all, a shooting charge marked
very competitively so much so that
even Bollywood and Malayalam film
makers prefer this state.
The film makers sought Pondicherry
for another reason. The erstwhile
government in Tamil Nadu had hiked
shooting charges five times.

|
But then the industry kept quiet.
Even those who are making noise now,
stayed like a mouse. In an attempt
to woo the film makers back to Chennai,
the incumbent government has now announced
reduction in shooting charges and
has also come forward with several
measures to boost the industry.
The industry was quick to react positively.
Says KR: “The announcement has
come as a shot in the arm.

I went to Pondicherry just because
the shooting charges were very high
here. It will also help small producers
who can’t afford to go out
of the state to shoot.” Director
Seeman went one up when he said:
“The previous government hiked
the charges by five times, no one
protested. It was a nail in the
coffin for small and medium producers.”
One good point he made was now more
employment would be generated for
Chennaiites with film makers coming
back to the city to shoot.

However,
whatever the producers and film makers may
say about the government’s move to
encourage the industry, good or bad, Pondicherry
will haunt film makers even if they want
to shift. The state has been a lucky for
most of the movies made here became big
hits. Can the producers get out of that
sentiment? |
