Indian cinema churns out the highest
number of films outside of Hollywood.
But the true range of the industry
is quite amazing because of the number
of languages in which the films are
made. There are in all about 22 different
languages and dialects spoken in this
country. We make films in at least
10 of them. However, to an average
viewer it seems that the world of
Indian films begins and ends with
Hindi cinema. Of course, it is a huge
establishment and money that is pumped
into the projects there are simply,
mind-boggling.

The
fate of the Hindi film stars, the Khan clan,
decides the barometer of the health of the
industry. Every move of theirs is followed
closely. Every word uttered by them is faithfully
noted. |

The
Southern Phenomenon
There is however a lion of a performer
if you move out of Bollywood and the
trophy goes to regional cinema. Much
as it would seem that we are trying
to fan the controversy of the Hindi
vs other cinema, there are figures
to prove that south Indian cinema
comes out with flying colours by any
performance yardstick. Hindi cinema
is like a giant moving about puffing
and panting while south Indian cinema
is a vibrant, thriving stallion. There
is organic growth in the industry
down south. |

They
get picked for projects in Hindi as well.
The south Indian stars are famous for their
discipline and professionalism and the industry
is famous for its organized working style. |
