Small time heroes’ posers to big heroes?
Are the small heroes posing a big threat to big heroes? Trade analysts say yes.
Thiruttu Payalae
With changing trends in story, music and taste, it is the small heroes that fit the bill. ‘Thiruttu Payalae’ starring Jeevan, ‘Kokki’ starring Karan and ‘Thalainagaram’ starring Sundar C are some of the latest examples.

Small hero movies are made at low cost. A movie can be made in just a crore and a half, less than half the salary of a top hero. The stories are different and the small heroes just lap up the role for they have no image to guard.
As if in an irony, the movies do well at the box-office. The producer or the director may not be seeing big money but they don’t see losses either. This has encouraged many producers considering small-hero budget films.

There is another problem with making a movie with a big hero; the story has to suit the image the hero has. And the discussion part of it? It takes weeks, if not months. Exotic locations have to be considered. All these shoot up the budget considerably.
Kokki
They can make about four to five small-hero films in just the amount the hero and the director of a big movie get paid.
Thalai Nagaram
The small heroes, hard pressed to stay in the field as they are, sign up roles with no big airs about them. They listen to the director and don’t interfere in matters of story or acting. They do what they are told to. Most of the movies turn out indeed well.

The number of hits in the small hero category is indeed impressive. The flops don’t push the producer to the rock bottom. In Kodambakkam today, the number of small hero movies in the making is larger than the big hero ones. Will the trend continue and change the very face of the Tamil cinema industry?
