Kamal charms Kolkata
The man who is the internationally recognized face of Indian actors, Kamal Hassan, is at his best when talking about his greatest passion – cinema. An artiste par excellence, he continuously reinvents himself to bring a new dimension to his cinematic pursuit. Widely regarded as the only actor who believes in cinema for its own sake, he invests time and money to satiate his hunger for perfection.
Kamal
A well read and widely traveled guy who is exposed to international cinema he can hold forth on any topic in films. He charmed a motley group sharing his deep interest in films. He was in Kolkata on Holi to inaugurate the new branch of the DVD lending library, Cinema Paradiso. Kolkata is the fourth outlet of this venture promoted by three film aficionados. The library holds original DVDs from films all over the world and not just restricted to Hollywood. Kamal was quite candid in stating that films have to get more content-rich rather than rely on technology alone. Technology can only dazzle but it cannot substitute for a good story. He praised Cinema Paradiso for bringing films from Europe, Africa and Latin America, thereby providing more variety to the viewers and giving a better perspective on good cinema.
He disclosed the great reverence he had for the legends like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He appreciated the stress laid by Bengali filmmakers on projecting good content on screen and hoped that others would follow suit. He expressed happiness about the developments in Tamil cinema. But, he wanted Tamil films to be packaged and marketed well for the home viewing segment. This he suggested would pave the way for eliminating piracy. He hoped attempts like Cinema Paradiso would find better patronage with the viewing public. The owners have planned to open their next outlet in Delhi followed by Mumbai and Pune. They have also said that they would shore up the collections to be a world class reference for film buffs, students and the public.
Kamal has Vettaiyadu Villayadu lined up for release and his next project, Dasavatharam, will also showcase his skills as a writer.
