Mani Ratnam, as the name says the Precious stone
to the Indian Film Industry. He needs no introduction;
all of us must have heard his name. He consistently
chooses contemporary, pragmatic themes and complex
plots as his story base line. His movies have
got a national appeal. Each and every single frame
in his movie articulates about the perfection.
The
fascinating thing about Mani is that he has neither
worked as an assistant director nor trained from
a Film institute. He was working as a consultant
after his graduation and then entered the film
industry with no experience. Now, persons are
waiting to get an opportunity to work with this
gentle man.
The special thing in Mani’s movies is the
importance he gives to cinematography and lighting.
Starting from his first he has worked with first
class cinematographers. Balu Mahendra handled
the camera for his first venture. Till date he
has worked with P.C.Sriram, Santhosh Sivan, Ravi.K.Chandran,
Rajiv Menon, Manikandan and all such experts are
now making colours in the Indian cinema.
He also concentrates on art direction and music
to the same extent of cinematography. The slum
which appears in Nayagan film is set made in Chennai
by Thotta Dharani. You believe it or not the apartment
that occurs in Anjali film is also a set by Thotta
Dharani. The music director A.R.Rehman who is
now making glimpses all over the world was introduced
by Mani in the film Roja.
Mani has worked with all leading actors starting
from Rajini, Kamal, Mamooty, Aravind Swamy, Shah
Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachaan and his
films are outspoken. Mani, A.R.Rehman, Vairamuthu
trio has been such a long journey and always the
songs of his movies are simply superb.
In a latest interview, he was asked whether he
is satisfied with any movie, he replied “No!
Might be my next movie”. What to say about
him still more! Such a magnanimous personality.
We are fortunate enough to have such a director
from our soil.
