Screenplay
is complementary to the story and cannot substitute
for it. There are several instances when a perfectly
good story was not presented appealingly, the culprit
being faulty screenplay. There are also the rare occasions
when a stamp size story was mounted majestically on
the shoulders of a nifty screenplay. These are however,
exceptions.
A good screenplay includes all the aspects of the movie.
It enhances the mood of the story. It makes the story
easily digestible to the audience. It evokes the right
shade of emotion in the audience. It mixes entertainment
elements like, dialogues, visuals, music, dance and
action in the right proportion.
When
is the screenplay planned? Ideally, it is written once
the story is finalized. The entire movie is broken down
and the screenplay is developed. While changes should
be minimal in the ideal scenario, there are several
impromptu changes made on the sets. In Indian films
most directors write their own screenplay while we have
professional writers doing the job in Hollywood.
We
now know the importance of a solid screenplay. In India,
although we have talented directors who write well,
there is also the healthy trend of growing number of
professional scriptwriters. This should be welcomed
as they bring in new perspectives to the movie and help
in improving the final product.
