We have star sons but not star Daughters |
|
|
|
|
|
It might seem a quirk of fate as far as Tamil
cinema is concerned. We have sons following fathers
or mothers, but when daughters have attempted
it, they have almost invariably failed.
|
Prabu
followed Sivaji
Ganesan, Karthik followed
Muthuraman, Prashanth
followed Thyagarajan and Vijay’s
father was a noted director. The list only includes
actors. But we can find plenty of examples in
families of technicians where the younger generation
were also attracted to cinema. But in this case
also, only men made it and the women just faded
away. A lone exception could be B.R. Vijayalakshmi,
daughter of yesteryear director B.R. Panthulu.
Therefore, it would be interesting to trace
the careers of some actresses who were daughters
of famous mothers.
We can count such actresses
in the fingers of one hand. Kanaka is a prominent
example. Daughter of the beautiful and talented
Devika, Kanaka became popular after the movie,
Karakattakkaran.

She
was expected to go places but her career did not
blossom. The reason reportedly was the undue interference
by her star mother. Similarly, Vaishnavi who is
the granddaughter of Sowcar Janaki had to be content
doing second fiddle roles. She did not come into
her own as a heroine. Sangavi became popular more
for her glamour appeal and she has withstood the
competition by playing such roles. Of the present
lot we have Abhinayasree who is a popular item
girl. The field does look quite barren as far
as second generation actresses goes.
What
are the reasons for such a scenario? First and
foremost, Indian society is patriarchial. Men
get all the attention and admiration while women
have to settle for whatever is handed over to
them. It makes sense to promote the son rather
than slog with a daughter. Therefore, actors and
actresses generally insist on their sons getting
into the film industry and the daughters either
pursue academics or are married off. For example,
actress Vanishree’s daughter is a meritorious
student who has won several gold medals in her
medicine course. Another important reason could
be the harsh realities and compromises which actresses
have to face in making their career. Having suffered
this dismal situation, they generally prefer to
keep their daughters sheltered from the pain.
Hence, daughters are meant to be showpieces. They
can enjoy the benefits from the industry in terms
of wealth and popularity but should not get soiled
in the humdrum reality of everyday working.
Is
the situation similar elsewhere? In Bollywood
and Hollywood, the situation is quite different.
We have daughters outsmarting the sons. The Kapoors,
Kajol and Angelica Houston are all fine examples.
What could be done to rectify the malady? The
only solution lies in making the industry more
professional with a corporate working style.
