Pattiyal
puts Selvaraghavan on a re-think mode |

Cast:

Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Director:Vishnuvardhan

Director
Vishnuvardhan need not have felt apprehensive
at all when he released his Pattiyil. The movie
is doing roaring business at the box-office. Produced
at two crores, the movie has established the fact
that Vishnuvardhan and heroes, Bharath and Arya
are here to stay. |
|
Though
the movie is a rehashed version of the Hollywood
flick City of God, Vishnuvardhan has done a good
job to make it look like an original. It is the
story of two criminals, Koshy (played by Arya)
and Selva (played by Bharath), hired killers used
by Samy (Haneefa). The story unfolds when Samy
hires them to kill a Kovai based businessman-cum-politician
Naachimutthu Gounder, played by Santhana Bharathi.
It is a fast paced thriller and cameraman Nirav
Shah has done a wonderful job in making you feel
not only the action sequences but also the sentimental
scenes as well as the pranks that Bharath plays
on his girlfriend Puja. |

Mission
accomplished
For Vishnuvardhan, making the film
was not so easy a task. He had a story but
then, he decided he must do some homework.
He went into the underworld of Chennai metropolis,
interviewed several dadas before drawing
up his characters. No wonder that the characters
seem to take realism to the dot. “I
did some research, of course, but then I
got into contact with the kind of characters
even while I was young. My dad was in fishing
business and we run into such characters
quite frequently,” says Vishnuvardhan
who himself has a sort of rebel attitude,
with a tattoo of Chinese tribal dragon peeping
out of his T-shirt. |

Music
and re-recording have beautifully gelled with
the story, script and scene. For Nirav Shah it
was tough indeed, not only visualizing the scene
but also carrying the heavy and bulky camera.
"The toughest part was shooting. With a camera
as heavy as that, the physical aspect of handling
it 15 hours a day was the most challenging part,"
laughs the cinematographer.
Theatre report:
Ask those coming out of the theatre how
the movie was, they reply in chorus, “Super.”
Trade analysts unequivocally call it a hit though
they wouldn’t put it on par with Arindhum
Ariyaamalum, Vishnuvardhan’s earlier film.
After effects:
Certainly this film must have put Selvaraghavan
and Dhanush in a re-think mode. Reports say that
Selvaraghavan’s Dhanush starrer Pudhupaettai
carries a similar theme. However, more concerned
must be some of the top stars. They better watch
out for these younger heroes and directors like
Arya, Bharath and Vishnuvardhan. Bharath as a
deaf and mute rogue has given his best. So has
the villain Haneefa. We join the audience in their
‘super.’ |
