Tirupathi: The big turning point for Ajith?

Ajith’s ruf and tuf guy screen persona took a huge beating after a string of flops. He turned his attention away from cinema and pursued car racing. When many in Kollywood had written him off, he bounced back with the fire to perform. The result – three films back to back. A lean and mean look and the impish dimpled smile. Paramasivan was the first off the block and did well during the Pongal season. His next film would be Tirupathi under AVM banner to be directed by Perarasu.
Ajith
Perarasu is quite excited about Tirupathi and he is cock sure that the film would definitely mark a milestone in Ajith’s career. The action sequences are awesome. There is a fire diving scene in the opening along with the thumping song, Tirupathi Vandha… Apparently Ajith did tremendous homework by observing a fire diver and came out in flying colours on the scene. The entire film crackles with energy. Ajith plays a sound arranger and he is like a cauldron of righteousness. He does not brook any corruption or inhumanity and vents out his anger. Beautiful Sadha plays a makeup artist. The two meet at workplace and their romance blossoms after an interesting experience.
Perarasu’s films are marked by all the elements of commercial cinema. The director makes no bones about it. He said that his aim was to provide total entertainment and he has been successful so far. He does not stop praising Ajith for his professionalism. He said that the apparent ill will between Vijay and Ajith was a creation of outsiders and the latter was in no way influenced by the fact that his earlier two films were with Vijay

Thirupaachi and Sivakasi had brother and mother bonding while Tirupathi would be about friendship. The dialogues and songs have been carefully crafted to pack the maximum punch.

Now to the music review of Tirupathi.
Ajith

1.Tirupathi Vandha Thirupam, Thee Pori Pola…(Shankar Mahadevan)

The opening number introduces the hero with catchy and rhyming words. Perarasu has penned the lyrics and the lines Tirupathi Vanda Thirupam just bubble with high voltage energy in booming Shankar Mahadevan’s voice. Bharadwaj’s music captures the thiruvizha atmosphere and this song would definitely make the front benchers break into a jig. There is a folksy element to the song with interludes of oyilattam and mayilattam with appropriate orchestration. Qualifies to be the next chart topper!

2.Aathadi Aathadi (K.K, Mathangi)

This naughty and playful number between the lead pair falls in the kuthu pattu slot. There are some new words added to the romantics’ lingo. This song also keeps up a lively pace. But the blending of the lead voices is a sore point. Although a new combination, KK and Mathangi have not yet found the right meeting point for meshing their voices.

3.Pudhu Veedu (Anuradha Sriram, Tippu)

This song has the same pace as the Aathadi number but this one is better as Anuradha Sriram and Tippu are known for the kuthu type and both have done well. Anu’s breezy diction adds magic to the song and the high point is the suitable percussion to match her high pitch.

4.Ennaiyae Enakku….(Vijay Yesudas)

The film talks about the brother sister bonding and Vijay Yesudas is an apt choice. Vijay’s voice has the same tonal quality as his father which makes him suitable for such moody and melodramatic songs. A song where young lads would leave for a puff in the theatre, while ladies (with brothers) might sniffle into their pallu corner or kerchief.

5.Kirai Vedhaipom Vada Komali (Pushpavanam Kuppuswamy, Reshmi)

This is again a folksy number and has the most talented Pushpavanam Kuppuswamy at helm of the proceedings. Starting with a Carnatic prelude, he moves on to a esapattu genre. The lively lyrics make the whole atmosphere in banter-like rivalry. The use of nadhaswaram lends a touch of rustic majesty and the chorus is well coordinated by the music director. Kandaswamy has done commendably while Reshmi could have been better.

6.Sollavum Mudiyala (Swarnalatha, Harish Ragavendar)

Beginning with a husky touch and moving on again for adiradi foot tapping kuthu pattu Swarnalatha’s voice with Harish seems to merge well. Bharathwaj has tried to build a different orchestration for this song and he has achieved the right tempo with good voices.

Tirupathi would be an all out feast for Kuthu Pattu lovers and those who like folksy tunes for modern temperament. The music director has catered to director Perarasu’s need for songs to match the theepori image of the hero. If only the lyrics were written with a better choice of words, the lilting tunes would be appreciated by everyone. As of now, thala’s fans have much to cheer about
