Journalism
is an exciting profession. It is the best way to learn about
the world around you. It draws out the adventurous and inquisitive
nature of our personality. It is also the beacon for holding
out on issues faced by the society. Being the most vocal advocate
of public opinion, it helps in moulding the collective thought
of the society towards meaningful objectives. There are several
niches in journalism – political, economic, sports and
film. It is the last category we are interested in.
Film journalism
is a relatively new phenomenon because movies are just over
a century old. That is why it is treated with some amount
of solicitousness and disdain. Also the development of the
reporting style over the years has concentrated on the charisma
of the stars. Their moves were recorded with minute attention.
Gossip, romantic affairs and bickering battles formed the
staple stuff. Film journalists became prominent members
of the charmed circle and they could easily be influenced
by the stars’ public relations advisors. Barring a
notable few, many became film journalists only by accident.
Or they wanted to use their reporting stint as a passport
to the industry. A serious attempt to disseminate the professional
and technical aspects of films or to create a cinematically
educated audience was lacking. Education about cinema was
confined to movie reviews and coverage of film festivals.
What is the direction
we should be heading? What are the challenges before the
profession? What should be the objectives of film journalism
in the new century? How should film journalists change their
approach and join the league of serious journalists? What
should they do to earn the respect of their peers? What
are their responsibilities?
The most important
dictum is that they should believe in the medium. Cinema
is as exciting and educative as it is entertaining. It is
made up of panoramic elements. It is the duty of journalists
to bring all these aspects to the readers. Covering shoots,
film launches, star affairs etc. is only a minuscule part
of the job. The greater calling is to create awareness about
the positive impact of movies. A keen world view of the
goings on in international cinema is imperative to bring
this perspective in film writing. We should not be confined
to Hollywood style action flicks, but pierce deeper into
films made in every part of the world. The universality
of the difficulties faced by mankind should be brought endearingly
to all the readers. Savvy with technology is another desirable
attribute. Constant learning and updation of knowledge is
the sure fire formula for success.
So, film journos!
Take heart! You are not poor cousins of those in the political
or economic or sports beats. Your contribution is just as
valuable. Learn to love the job and bring your creativity
to the fore.
