JAVAN RHINO

Biological name : Rhinoceros sondaicus

The Javan Rhino is the rarest of the rhino species with fewer than 60 animals surviving in only two known locations: one in Indonesia and the other in Vietnam. Rhinos have been poached from these small populations in recent years and much more intensive protection is needed if this species is to survive. The Javan and the Sumatran compete for the dubious distinction of being the most endangered species of rhino.

WEIGHT:

The Javan rhino weighs 1500 - 2000 kg.

Habitat:

The Javan rhino prefers tall grass and reed beds in dense lowland rain forests with a good supply of water and plentiful mud wallows. It now occupies hilly areas up to 2000 m (6550'), but this may be a result of being driven into suboptimal upland habitats due to the pressure of human settlement in lowland areas. In Vietnam it occurs on very steep hills covered with thick bamboo and rattan stands.

GestationPeriod:

16 months.

Birth Season:

Between the end of February and the end of April.

Birth Rate:

One calf is born at a time. The time between births is probably at least 3 years.

Horn:

It is generally believed that only the males have a small horn. The horn is
actually a dense formation of hair; it is not bone.
