A shootout and a sugar free romance
By Behindwoods News Bureau.
May 28, 2007
Two films opened this Friday across India and have met with a very diverse response. No surprises though, this was the way things were supposed to be. One was a big budget, heavy duty multi starrer with action bordering on bloody violence and the other was a ‘sugar free romance’ with relatively lesser star value.
Shoot-out
Shootout at Lokhandwala, the former opened to a fabulous response at almost all release centers and why not? It is not often that you get to see Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Arbaaz Khan, Tushaar Kapoor and many more names in the same movie and we have not mentioned any of the ladies in the cast. Though it is not yet time to give a final account of the public’s word of mouth, it seems to be safe to say that this is the sort of movie that men are going to like. The movie, based on a real encounter that had happened in a suburb of Mumbai over a decade ago has almost an overdose of action, something that may keep women and families away from theaters. The climax has been termed as close to gory. There seems to be a sort of catch 22 situation here as the high octane action is proving to be the strength as well as the drawback of the movie. The initial collections are suggesting that the movie might recover its budget within a week at the box office provided the overseas audience reacts well. But there seems to be little doubt over that, the overseas has always welcomed multistarrers with open arms.

Looking at the other release of the week, Cheeni Kum; an antithesis to Shootout at Lokhandwala which has everything in strong doses. Cheeni Kum, as the name suggests is a movie where everything is kept simple. The movie opened to a 25-30% response in most centers. However, things have picked up thanks to positive word of mouth and the movie does have a very good chance of making good its investment. This is really good news for Bollywood as last weeks releases Raqueeb and Ek Chalis Ki last local too carry pretty decent reports. Finally looks like the hit drought for Bollywood is coming to an end as the monsoons are set to start all over the country.
