The Cannes film festival and all the big names
of world cinema sat up and took notice as
Indian cinema (read Bollywood) made its presence
felt at arguably the second biggest stage
in World cinema. Some of the best Hindi films
of the past year and some of the most exciting
films in the making were showcased for the
international audience present.

First to be screened was Rajkumar Hirani’s Vidhu
Vinodh Chopra production Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The film
was reportedly screened to a packed house and received
a three minute standing ovation at the end. Pity producer
Vidhu Vinodh Chopra could not be present at the screening.
He had to fly back home to tend to his ailing mother,
he sure would have been a proud man.
Mani Ratnam’s Guru too had an exclusive premiere
at the festival and the response has been termed very
positive. On a sorry note, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya
Rai gave the premiere a miss in spite of being present
at Cannes. Needless to say, Mani was upset. We will hear
more in the coming days. Also to be screened in the coming
days is Vidhu Vinodh Chopra’s directorial venture
Ekalavya-The Royal Guard.
Among the films that are under the making, the promos
of which were shown at the festival are Jodha-Akbar and
Drona. Jodha-Akbar is period biopic on the life and times
of Akbar being directed by Ashuthosh Gowariker starring
Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. A two minute promo of
the film was shown and the response has been termed exciting.
Drona is again a period flick starring Abhishek Bachchan
and being directed by Goldie Behl. The stills of the film
were revealed and Abhishek’s never before seen looks
were highly appreciated.
