Cricket and controversy have always interested
Bollywood. Lots of films have dealt with either
of these themes and many of them have met
with success. Lagaan is perhaps the best example
of a movie based on cricket becoming a runaway
hit. Controversy, well that is there in plenty.
Talking of the more recent ones, Black Friday
and Parzania are the ones that immediately
come to mind.

Black Friday dealt with the 93 Mumbai blasts while Parzania
was based on the Gujarat communal riots.
Now, a movie is being planned which will see the amalgamation
of two genres. It will be based on the life and death
in tragic circumstances of former international cricketer
and Pakistan’s national cricket team coach Bob Woolmer.
Assuming that all readers know enough about the Bob Woolmer
the person and his mysterious death to be able to follow
this news, we carry on. It is Mahesh Bhatt’s banner
that is planning to make a movie on this subject. Not
surprising, they are known for their penchant towards
real life stories and characters. Mahesh Bhatt’s
last film as director, Zakhm had dealt with his own turbulent
childhood and the troubles that his single mother faced
in bringing him up. The more recent Woh Lamhe from the
same banner had dealt with the life and untimely death
of actress Parveen Babi. Both these films had received
appreciation and Woh Lamhe was almost declared a hit.
So, the Bhatts’ track record with tragic real life
stories is quite good, let’s see whether this materializes
and how it turns out.
For those who do not follow cricket and are not familiar
with the Bob Woolmer tragedy, these are the details. Bob
Woolmer was a former England test cricketer who then turned
to coaching. He coached the South African national team
for nearly four years before moving on to International
Cricket Council Academy. It was more than a year back
that he took up the job of Pakistan’s national coach.
All was well until at the 2007 World Cup Pakistan suffered
a shock first round exit after a defeat at the hands of
minnows Ireland.
Bob Woolmer was found dead under mysterious circumstances
a day later in his hotel room. Investigations have confirmed
murder.
