The IIFA best actress award went
to Priyanka Chopra for her performance
in Fashion. Ever since then there
has been a lot of discussion on
why Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s
performance in Jodha Akbar was ignored.
In fact Jodha Akbar’s director
Ashitosh Gowarikar echoed this sentiment
on stage while receiving the Best
Director award for the same film.
He also derided Priyanka’s
best actress award and said Jaya
also felt the same.
Toeing in line with Ashutosh, Jaya
has now said that her daughter in
law deserved the award for her excellent
portrayal and body language in Jodha
Akbar. According to Jaya, “First
of all it is being presumed that
Ashutosh unnecessarily mentioned
my name regarding Aishwarya’s
omission from the awards. The fact
is I suggested he bring up the question
on stage at IIFA. We were discussing
why Aishwarya has not been given
any award for 'Jodhaa Akbar' and
I suggested Ashutosh bring up the
matter. So when he mentioned my
name, he wasn't doing anything wrong.”
