This one might have been a surprise even to
the makers of the film. Vipul Shah would never
have thought while directing the movie that
it would eventually end up in very elite company;
this one was simply not meant to be a masterpiece
but then great works of art are not planned,
they just happen.

When Namastey London, the Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer
released earlier this year it was received pretty well
by the audience as a breezy romance with a generous sprinkling
of comedy; Akshay being the livewire of the movie. But
after having a good run in theaters the movie was forgotten
as Bollywood and its audiences looked ahead to bigger
things and Namastey London was registered in everyone’s
memory as one of the hits of 2007 (the number of hits
this year is really low).
But now, Namastey London has received official master
class status with the Academy of motion pictures, arts
and sciences (the one that gives away the Oscars) inducting
the screenplay of the movie into its library. This is
an honor reserved for movies of the highest class and
it would not be wrong to say that it is a big surprise
that Namastey London which boasted of nothing spectacular
or out of the ordinary has been accorded this status.
Namastey London now joins Indian movies such as Lagaan
and Devdas that are already part of the library. Kudos
to the Namastey London team for this rare and distinguished
honor. |
