It is the biggest surprise of the year. A
virtual nobody from nowhere has come out of
the blue and landed the knockout punch to
the ones who have specialized in flooring
opponents on screen for a long long time.
Himesh Reshammiya gave Bollywood its biggest
shock of 2007 (good or bad only time will
tell) when his maiden movie Aap Ka Suroor
released in theaters on Friday.

Releasing alongside were heavyweights like Aawarapan being
aggressively promoted by the Bhatt's and the Deol family's
dream project Apne which had all three Deols on screen
for the first time in a power packed movie. In a reversal
of roles, the punters are getting punched big time on
their noses as Aap Ka Suroor took this year's biggest
opening.
It is like a featherweight category boxer knocking out
a heavyweight in the first round. Himesh Reshammiya's
movie's opening is being compared to the one that Kkrish
received the same time last year (90-95%). This is compared
to the 40-50% starts that Apne has got off to and a slightly
lower one that Aawarapan has managed. What caused this
Himesh mania is a puzzle. Maybe his bad boy image…
the guy who never smiles countenance and the constantly
cap wearing persona had added enough mystery to the character
to draw people into theaters to see what this movie is
all about. And it is not just the opening that has been
good. Even the word of mouth is pretty positive and looks
like Aap Ka Suroor will end up being the most profitable
(when compared to budget) mid year movie of 2007.
Although Aap Ka Suroor has managed to get the head start,
the other two who released along side have not done too
badly either. Apne is carrying extremely positive reports,
especially about the action loaded second half with Sunny's
boxing match (Rocky style) being the highlight. Aawarapan
has got some attention courtesy Emraan Hashmi's new bearded
long hair look and a different story. However it may find
difficult to sustain at the box office due to the heavy
competition.
So that's the verdict. Aap Ka Suroor has got in front
(imagine Bangladesh winning the cricket world cup), Apne
is not too bad (sure to do great business in Sunny Deol's
stronghold- interiors of North India) and Aawarapan might
break even (it released in Pakistan too).
And just for the record - Himesh Reshammiya had requested
the Deols to postpone the release of their movie to allow
Aap Ka Suroor to do some business at the box office. The
Deols refused- they might be regretting now (but that
is uncharacteristic of Punjab's puttars, they stand by
their decisions).
