It was around this time last year that Gandhigiri
became a rage thanks to a gangster and his
lovable sidekick. Munnabhai and Circuit revived
the memories of the Mahatma and his principle
of ahimsa as never before in the past few
decades. Suddenly Gandhigiri was in vogue
and the effects of the movie (Lagey Raho Munna
Bhai)

were so profound that Gandhigiri is now a subject of study
and research for undergraduate students at one of the
top colleges of Delhi University.
This year Gandhiji is coming again. Maybe this news is
a bit late in coming, but this is a news that should not
be missed. Not only because this is about a movie on the
Father of our nation, but because it is a movie like never
before. There have been many movies based on the life
of one of the greatest men ever to have walked the earth.
All of them had been well shot and explored with honesty
Gandhiji’s life and his journey towards the Mahatma.
Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi and the Rajat Kapoor
starrer The Making of the Mahatma are the pick of the
lot. But all the movies had one thing in common. They
all explored Mahatma Gandhi more and Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi less. This time we have a movie coming our way
that is trying to do what has never been thought of before-
explore Gandhi the person, the husband, the father. Of
course one has to be very careful with such attempts not
to touch any sensitive cord or hurt the feelings of any
of the followers of Gandhi (quite a surprise top know
that they still exist but a relief).
Gandhi- My Father is a movie that tries to follow the
personal life of Gandhiji focusing on the troubled relationship
that he had with his son. The movie has Darhan Jhariwala
playing the role of Mahatma Gandhi with Shefalli Chaya
playing Kasturba Gandhi. The movie has its bit of star
appeal in the form of Akshaye Khanna who plays Gandhi’s
son and Bhumika Chawla who plays his wife. Of course,
a movie about Gandhiji cannot remain isolated from the
freedom struggle of India. This movie too follows the
struggles but with lesser emphasis than in earlier Gandhi
movies.
The movie releases late this month and has been produced
by Anil Kapoor. It is expected to do the round of many
film festivals this year. It comes at a time when questions
about whether Gandhi and his values are still relevant
in today’s world were rising again. Especially after
the death of Ramachandra Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma Gandhi
and great scholar) last month at the India International
center in Delhi from where his body was removed in a very
disrespectful manner hardly befitting for a great scholar,
let alone the grandson of the father of the nation.
Hope Gandhi- My Father and the response it receives may
give us a few answers.
