It
is the most risky part of film making;
investing money on a creative work,
the fate of which depends on the paying
public, the harsh media and a variety
of other factors. A person stands
to lose crores in this business, but
it should also be added in the same
breath that if things go right this
is the thing that one would like to
be doing.
All
technicians, artists and others walk away with
their paycheques but it is the producer whose
bank account swells each day movie tickets are
bought at the box office. So it is a bit tricky.
To produce or to not produce has been a question
that has troubled many stars over the decades.
Most of them, understanding the benefits that
it can bring have ventured into it. Some have
been successful, some not so successful and some
have swallowed the bitter pill.
Aamir Khan started his career as a producer in
the best possible way with Lagaan. SRK started
Dreamz Unlimited which produced the damp Phir
Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and one or two others which
did not get noticed. He then revamped his production
house, renamed it as Red Chillies Entertainment
and came up with his first winner Main Hoon Naa.
On the other hand Amitabh Bachchan almost lost
the earnings of a lifetime through Amitabh Bachchan
Corporation (ABC). KBC saved him. Now he is trying
to revive the production house.
All this while we talked about actors turned producers.
Ever heard of actresses turning producers; certainly
a rare breed. Now we have an actress who has dared
to take the plunge. It is former Miss Universe,
Sushmitha Sen.
She will don the role of producer for the movie
Jhansi Rani. The name says it all. The movie should
most certainly be a biopic of one of the most
valiant women India (maybe the world) has ever
seen. It might not be a wild guess to say that
Sushmitha will be playing the lead role. Let’s
hope that this brave move by this lady who has
more to her than just being a Bollywood actress
(she is a social activist too) meets with success.
It might just spur other actresses to invest;
not only in films, in other areas too.
