The direction itself was not pre-planned but Aamir had to opt for it owing to some differences that arose between him and the original director, Amol Gupte, who finally agreed to be the scriptwriter and creative director of the film.

The film has struck the right chord with the audiences across the country for its simplistic theme about parents and their perspective of nurturing kids. This gave the film a bigger boost as the Delhi government, on account of its theme, has granted it tax-free status. This move will bring down the price of tickets in theatres making the movie accessible to a wider audience. Whether other states will follow suit, we will have to wait and watch.
