seat edge thriller, maybe a bit in the ‘Wild
Wild West’ or Mackennah’s Gold
model.
Assembling maybe the most explosive star
casts these days in Bollywood, debutant
director Vijay Krishna Acharya has certainly
given himself all the chances of striking
gold. Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan back
together, a long time after their successful
Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Keemat days. Then
you have Kareena with her all new look and
the oldest ‘young man’ of Bollywood,
Anil Kapoor. All this backed by the Yashraj
banner is an irresistible combination and
movie buffs are smacking their lips. Don’t
think that the debutant director is a greenhorn,
he scripted both the Dhoom(s). Have you
watched the teaser where Anil Kapoor goes
in his characteristic desi English ‘First
impression is the last impression’.
Sirf-Life looks greener on the other
side
Four couples from different walks of
life, different lifestyles, different problems-everything
is different. Yet, their paths cross and
the story moves towards a culmination. It
is a look at the fast paced life of people,
a tongue in cheek perspective, as the director
liked to call it.
Clashing with a Yashraj biggie is not something
that a producer would want to do. But the
makers of this movie seem to know their
target audience (the multiplex) and have
calculated their chances well. Having a
star cast that can bring in movie lovers:
Kay Kay Menon, Manisha Koirala, Ranvir Shourey
and Sonali Kulkarni: the movie with some
intelligent marketing could do well for
itself.
From Last Week
Hope and a Little Sugar
Well, without being sarcastic, we have to
say that the movie’s performance at
the box office has been hopeless. Not to
say that it is bad cinema, on the contrary
it has got extremely good reviews. But a
subject that caters to a minor cross section
of the audience can never hold on.
U, Me aur Hum
Holding fort at the box office over the
last week in the absence of anything substantial
and keeping the business rolling was Ajay
Devgan’s directorial debut. But this
movie too couldn’t pick up as expected.
Though aided by positive word of mouth the
film just failed to gain momentum. Not a
failure by any means, there is a feeling
of unrealized potential for the movie to
be an above average grosser.
Krazzy 4
Alongside U, Me aur Hum this movie has hung
on. But it too suffered a heavy drop over
the week reducing its chances of being termed
a real hit. This is a bit disappointing
considering the surprisingly good opening
that it had got off to.
Meanwhile, the industry which
had initially put on a brave front has conceded
that the IPL is eating into the big summer
pie. Having been proclaimed an instant success,
the IPL is threatening to hit Bollywood
during May. Hope Tashan can change all that.
Sneak Preview
Mr. Black Mr. White
Earlier titled Gopi Kishan, this movie looks
like a comic caper with Arshad Warsi doing
the honors with Suneil Shetty for company.
But it will have to contend with Tashan
which will have completed one week by May
2.
Anamika
Horror returns to Bollywood on May 2nd with
Anamika. Directed by Anant Mahadevan and
starring Dino Morea along side Minnisha
Lamba, the movie will look to scare you,
so be ready.
Pranali
Looks like another brave filmmaker is getting
ready with his attempt at offbeat cinema.
We do not know much about Pranali at this
point of time but it appears to be a hard
-hitting drama portraying contemporary society.
