The
most awaited movie of the year has finally managed
to hit the marquee. Director Gautham Menon makes
a comeback after a sabbatical post ‘Kakkha
Kakkha’. The fans who had waited a very
long time for the release of this movie, have
finally got to savour the moment, as the movie
opened to packed houses all over the state today.
This classic hot-on-chase cop movie packs many
a punch, many of which leaves you amazed, though
there is that clichéd stuff here and there.

Prima
Facie – the plot:
The movie unfolds in an earth shattering manner.
Trust me; this is got to be one of Kamal Haasan’s
best ‘entry scenes’. The slam bang
approach, with which the movie begins, immediately
draws your attention. DCP Raghavan (Kamal Hassan)
is an upright cop who has his own intrinsic style
of dealing with criminals. He is the dare-devil
cop who brings about an amazingly cool and classy
approach to his job. He shares a very special
relationship with Arockiaraj (Prakash Raj) who
is his senior officer in the hierarchy. |
|
|
Raghavan
is assigned by Arockiaraj to trace his missing
daughter. Raghavan embarks on the mission and
he is stunned to see the corpse of Rani (Prakash
Raj’s daughter) being buried under the soil.
There begins a roller-coaster ride for Raghavan
as the murder of Rani leads to a series of other
murders. There is a mystery which is to be unraveled
and Raghavan is game for it. The rest of the plot
hinges on how Raghavan chases and hunts down the
elusive fugitives in his own inimitable style. |

Strengths
:
The primary strength of the movie lies in
its performers. The movie boasts of some
first-rate performances from its lead actors.
Kamal Hassan, as usual, is at his histrionic
best. He is definitely the lynchpin of the
movie. The movie literally pivots around
this great man. His action sequences in
this movie are definitely noteworthy and
are sure to be talked about for some time.
Also his comic timing in relatively serious
scenes makes your marvel at the ingenuity
of the actor |

Jyothika, on the other hand plays a role
of Aaradhana, which you often don’t see
her enacting. She plays a sober, yet strong woman
who is wriggling out of a troubled relationship,
with great aplomb and finesse. It is a distant
Jothika from her usual bubbly self. Prakash Raj,
does a good job of what one might call a very
brief cameo. Kamalinee Mukherjee as the vivacious
Kayalvizhi has very little to do but yet makes
an impression. Daniel Balaji as the hideous psychopath
is a revelation. Lev Gorn plays a neat cameo of
Anderson, the NYPD detective.
On the technical front, Ravi Varman has done a
wonderful job of aesthetically capturing the scenic
beauty of New York and the back-waters of Kerala.
Also has he canned the song sequences with uncanny
anticipation. Harris Jeyaraj has scored a touchdown
with the songs and the haunting background score.
Gautham has to be commended for cranking a brilliant
premise within the ambit of cinematic realities

Flip
side:
Though the movie boasts of an ensemble team
and a brilliant script, there are a few
let downs which are an eye-sore. The movie
tends to drag in parts, which tends to kill
the excitement. Also, unwanted song sequences
slow the pace of the movie. The movie has
a slight hangover of ‘Kakkha Kakkha’,
hampering the cause.
The stereotypical manner in which villainy
has been portrayed is glaringly evident
and is a huge irritant. Daniel Balaji tends
to remind the role of ‘Pandya’,
made memorable by Jeevan, in ‘Kakkha
Kakkha’.

|
|
Many
illogical sequences often make you question the
credibility of the director, who has used valuable
screen space on a lot of blood and gore! |
|
Final
word
The movie which kept many a film-
buff waiting has garnered a fantastic opening
all across the state. The movie is definitely
worth your money, if you choose to ignore
some of the apparent glitches in the movie.
It is definitely a triumph of sorts for
Gautham and Manickam Narayanan, who have
gone through innumerable hitches in getting
the movie released. Enjoy!! |
