Vijayakanth's
movies are nothing short of sensational.
Already a prominent face in the state's
politics, his movies of late have had
a dose of political innuendos in them.
Produced by Captain Creations and directed
by the Captain himself, Virudhagiri has
Vijayakanth and Meenakshi Dikshit in lead
roles. The music has

been
scored by Sundar C. Babu. With the assembly elections
round the corner, there were rumours that Viruthagirl
will be politically inclined in terms of songs and
dialogues. Let us see what we have in store.
Makkal Oru Puram...
Vocals: Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Vaali
What fans expected is right here, in the first song
itself. The Murasu (Vijayakanth's party symbol)
sounds loud in all eight directions. Makkal oru
pakkam.... is Vijayakanth's agony, frustration and
hopes of a better governance beautifully penned
by Vaali. Shankar Mahadevan is in absolute ease
singing this and could easily be liked by many.
A perfect start to the album which sets the tone
for the rest of the album!
Devathai Ondru...
Vocals: Hariharan, Chinmayi
Lyrics: Snehan
We move to a slightly melodious number, though the
base rhythm is slightly up in pace. Hariharan and
Chinmayi make us travel a few years back as the
song is reminiscent of yesteryear melodies. Snehan's
lyrics and Sundar C. Babu's music do not gel so
well and hence the song does not remain in our memory
after we listen to it.
Mannavane Mandhirane...
Vocals: Senthildas, Srilekha, Manicka
Vinayagam
Lyrics: Yugabharathi
Mannavane is another racy number in the album. Sundar
C. babu tries hard to add new sounds to this song
but sadly cannot help prevent from giving it an
'orchestral' feeling to it. Yugabharathi's lyrics
again sing praises of the Captain and the rap interlude
stands poles apart. Just another song to add to
the collection!
Pookkal
Endrom...
Vocals: Sadhana
Sargam
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
Muthukumar pens down a song in respect of the fairer
sex. Sadhana Sargam's voice stands apart from the
jarring music in the background. Not sure if a rap
sequence is required for an otherwise mellifluous
song. Though the music is distracting, Muthukumar
and Sadhana Sargam combine to give us a decent number.
Yezhaigal
Thozha Va Va...
Vocals: SP Balasubrahmanyam
Lyrics: Snehan
Another one for the Captain's fans! Another anthem
for the party with elections round the corner! Sundar
C. Babu makes sure that the vigour in SPB's voice
is reciprocated well by setting up a neat arrangement.
This song is sure to connect well with the audience
when seen on the silver screen. A nice choice to
end the album like the way it started!
Verdict:
Overall, Vijayakanth, being the director of this
movie, has shown no qualms in his intentions of
making this movie a political statement. The lyrics
are definitely overdosed with political insinuations
and also about praising the leader himself. Sundar
C. Babu has not had much to do here but could have
shown some restraint in a couple of songs where
the melodies warrant a subdued arrangement. The
album is saved to an extent by the voices and efforts
of singers like SPB, Hariharanm SHankar Mahadevan
and Sadhana Sargam. Virudhagiri is strictly for
the Captain's fans and must be a rage when he reflects
the same on the screen!
