The friendship that a small village girl shares with Charlie Chaplin seems to be the basic premise of Chaplin Saamanthi. This film stars newcomers and has been shot in and around Trichy. Director R.Prakash has been an assistant to director Balasekaran before. Baby Kruthika plays the role of Samanthi. Kannan of ‘Thamizh Padam’ fame has composed the music. Is it on the mark?
Nee Vanthu Pona… Karthik, Thilaga Lyrics: Viveka The song soars straightaway. A nice melody with sweet vocals. Karthik sounds very different in this song. Or is it not the Karthik that everyone knows? The instrumentals are endearing. ‘Myna Myna’ shades are there particularly in the bass effect. A simple melody that strikes the right chord, nevertheless Vellaiyilum Vellaiyaga… Selvam, Jipsy Rajkumar Lyrics: Jipsy Rajkumar A street-play song on the lines of the famous Anbe Sivam song. A tribute to Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, definitely a novel attempt for a Tamil song. A great experimental attempt but, not sure if it is exactly a repeat song on the everyday playlists. Thumbs up for the intentions and the novel idea behind the song. Naan Charlie Chaplin Ponnu… Baby Harini Lyrics: Kannan, R.Prakash A song for the kids by a kid. What’s expected is a cute song with light hearted instrumentals. This is exactly what this is. A nice one. Again a dedication to the comedy king through the eyes of a small girl. Kavala Oor Kavala… Mukesh Lyrics: R.Prakash Fast paced with very energetic vocals by Mukesh. ‘Puli Urumudhu’ revisited in no small measure. The lyrics reek of admiration and heroism. Mukesh’s flexibility and ease at pronouncing potential tongue twisters is admirable though. Nee Vanthu Pona… Thilaga Lyrics: Viveka The shorter version of the first duet. The female vocals were the highlight in that duet and those very same vocals have been used in a separate song as well. Thilaga is a talent to watch out for.
Verdict: An interesting effort from ‘Thamizh Padam’ fame Kannan. The tunes at places sound straight out of some old songs but, the theme of the film has been translated into few of the songs very well. A nice melody is thrown into the mix as well.
