Produced
by Murali Cine Arts, directed
by N.K. Viswanathan and starring
Namitha (amusingly called
‘oomphalicious’
by Indian Express), Raja,
Vadivelu, Nila, Jothilaxmi
along with others, this film
is a remake of the yesteryear
blockbuster starring Jayamalini
and Narasimha Raju. The special
effects in this film are supposed
to be very good. Isaignani
Ilayaraja does the honors
in the music department, tuning
5 songs for the album.
Ponmani
Theril---
Vocals: Yeya
Shinde & Chorus.
Lyrics: Na.
Muthukumar
Though this song has a ‘heard-before’
tune, the stylish Kiravani
notes, especially the chorus
start ‘sa pa ma paa
ma ------ri ga maa ma ga ri
ga ri sa’ are pleasing.
The percussions, and the music
(strings in fact) are neat.
The tune flows so well with
the lyrics. Good singing by
the lady.

Nilavu
Varum Neram---
Vocals: Swetha, Ujjaini
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar
The soft opening bars of this very ‘Yuvan
Shankar’ like number dip down to
usher in the deep rolling rhythms that
set the passionate mood for this song.
The music interludes are crisp and minimal.
Sung very well by Swetha with subtle nuances.
Could make a brief hop onto the charts.
Poothadhu Poovu---
Vocals: Rahul, Rita.
Lyrics: Vaali
There is no gainsaying the fact that Vaali
remains ever-youthful at heart! Do relish
the second charanam, where words related
to the ‘forest’ imagery come
together so smoothly! Rita is a joy to
listen to. Rahul is subdued. Again, the
music is soft, seductive – the Chakravaham
raga seems to have been touched upon.
Kattikkitta
Raasa---
Vocals: Rahul, Nancy Vincent,
Feji & Chorus.
Lyrics: Vaali
A playful exploration of the melodic and
western aspects of the Sankarabaranam
ragam, it involves exchanges between a
beauty, her mother and an ardent suitor.
The song moves along on catchy rhythms
and equally light music interludes. Could
make a hesitant climb onto the charts.
Unnai
Vittal---
Vocals: Chitra.
Lyrics: Vaali
The unusually high-pitched pallavi almost
makes your skin tingle, and Chitra, bless
her soul, carries it off with utter ease!
Do we hear the raga Dhenuka here? Decent
accompaniments from the strings and tabla,
but routine ‘Amman’ stuff,
basically! Could appeal to a certain section
of listeners.
Verdict:
Though this film is supposed to be a Vittalacharya
movie remake, the music appears to be
so composed as to not feel ‘dated’.
But at the same time it has no noisy modernistic
frills. The background music is refreshing,
along with the rhythms; you really need
to savor the neat stitching together of
the lyric and the ‘mettu’.
But a couple of songs make you wonder
if they are ‘old wine in a new bottle’.
