Written
and directed by S.S.Rajamitran and produced
by P.L.Thenappan, this film is about a
village lad’s love for his mother
where we have Aadhi (of ‘Mirugam’
fame) and Meera Nandan (of ‘Valmiki’
fame) doing the lead roles. Santhanam
provides the laughs. Music is by the young
talented S.Thaman.
Kuthu Kuthu..
Vocals: Aalap Raju, Bruce
Lee, Vel Murugan
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
An interesting number that takes a dispassionate
look at the ‘great leveler’
that is Death. The robust native vocals
are gently balanced by the lightly western
instrumental bits. Looks like Sindubairavi
raga. A neat attempt, especially the trumpets.
Paniyae Paniyae...

This dreamy duet needs to be relished just as much
for its melodic instrumental bits (violins and guitar)
as for its lyrics. The lilting opening notes ‘ma
paa dha pa dha pa dha---saa ni’( Natabairavi
scale with an attractive occasional Kiravani ‘ni’
swara ) roll right through the song. On the flip side,
the vocals sound quite muffled.
Pachai Kili...
Vocals: Rahul Nambiar
Lyrics: Viveka
When your home serves as ‘paasatthin pallikkoodam’,
where is the need to sound so startled about it? We
mean the odd sounding ‘bambaram poley’
chord shift! And the nagaswaram piece is a bit of
a joke. A confusing number from Thaman. Only Rahul
Nambiar stands firm amidst all this.
Aathadi
Aathadi...
Vocals: Naveen
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
A song of loneliness in love. The high-pitched rendering
is suggestive of an aching heart. The rhythm composition
is interesting.
Ayyanar-Theme
Music...
A tentative start leads to a robust roll of drums
and the rigidity is then relieved with soft notes
from strings and keyboards before picking up the strong
rhythms again. A short piece.
Verdict:
The title suggests a rural theme and so do the lyrics.
But Thaman is quietly working towards building up
a signature style for himself as seen from the slightly
western orientation of the music accompanying the
vocals. How well these songs blend with the story
when it unfolds on screen remains to be seen. |
