Kabilan
Ajmal stars in double roles in this movie which is expected to provide a solid footing for him as a lead hero. Kannan provides the music and the director Prabhu Raja is a former associate of director Shankar. Now, onto the music review... Oh Indira Oh Indira... Sayonara Philip and Karthik A song that attempts to sound hip after a haunting start. The instrumentals give a sort of a retro feel particularly the trumpets while the cute accordion and harmonica touches stand out. On the whole, it is a fast paced number with Karthik in a peppy mood. Hai Papapa... Sayonara Philip and Karthik This is a miniature version of the Oh Indira… number and it starts abruptly. The idea behind having this mini version might make sense once we see the movie. Naughty Raja Raja... Bappi Lahiri This is a nice retro disco track rendered by the famous Bappi Lahiri. The song has deliberately been composed with the 80s charm intact, particularly the beats and the old-world instrumentals. There are Hindi lyrics thrown in too, probably to cash in on Bappi Da’s presence. Karuppampatti Karuppampatti... Naveen, Mukesh and Suchitra Here comes another folksy fast paced number with rustic instrumentals and percussions, with the string interlude before the anupallavi standing out. This song doesn’t have anything new to offer with the tune being something that you might have heard before. The lyrics talk about celebrating Pongal. Kannamma Chinna Ponnamma... Suchitra, A very short village based number which is playful and naughty. Doesn’t stand out. Adaleru Kaalaiyelam... Mukesh Turns out to be another run-of-the-mill ‘kuthu’ number. The frequent choice of Mukesh for such numbers adds to the monotony. The only stand out aspect of the song is the sarangi-like instrumentals and the sudden rock touch before the charanam.
Verdict: There are a couple of likable numbers in Naughty Raja Raja and Oh Indira, but the rest of the songs are run-of-the-mill. Kannan hasn’t lived up to his promise with this album.
