VIKRAM VEDHA MOVIE REVIEW
Director duo Pushkar and Gayathri, has demonstrated through their earlier films Oram Po and VA Quarter Cutting, their quirky style of filmmaking. In their third directorial Vikram Vedha, Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi join them for a brilliantly written story that is bound to satisfy the audience from all corners.
This is for all those who do not know about the Vikramaditya-Vedhal stories. In these tales, Vedhalam is being carried by King Vikramaditya and the former narrates a story to the latter and upon its culmination, a tricky question is put forth to the king. If Vikram keeps mum despite knowing the answer, his head would be blasted to pieces. This is the basic knot around which Pushkar and Gayathri have spun their gangster tale and in due course, poses a query of dharma and adharma too.
Right from the word go, Vikram Vedha begins on a clever note and maintains it till the end. It is a long time since we saw a writing that trusted the audience’s intelligence and respected them too. Kudos Pushkar-Gayathri!
It is said that a film is 90% done when it has the apt casting and Vikram Vedha can boast from the rooftop on this feat. What a performance by the leads Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi! Amazing demonstration of their skills! It is to the credit of both these artists that they have chosen a story that has two leading heroes. It clearly shows the confidence and secure feeling they have towards their respective crafts. There are quite a few scenes where Vijay Sethupathi sashays through his role effortlessly and gains the applause- his body language, dialogue delivery, movement of his facial muscles and his nonchalant swag. Hats off to Maddy for giving the space for another actor to score. It is a delight to watch these seasoned actors perform. The supporting cast of Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi, Prem and others have all done a brilliant job.
Dialogues are one of the many highlights of the film and they exude sharp wit, sarcasm, emotions and intelligence, a sample being- “Gandhi payyan Gandhiyaa, Godse payyan Godse yaa?” “Yen sir, indha factory ellaam, nejamavae yedhachum seyvaangala, illa namma maadhiri gangster sanda poda katti irukkaangala?” There are plenty in the film like these to relish. Cinema is a visual medium and it does not need pages of dialogues to explain what is happening. This is evident throughout Vikram Vedha and the best one is when Maddy goes to Prem’s house to inform an important news.
Technically also, Vikram Vedha scores its brownie points. Sam CS’s tracks are a winner all the way and his BGM is at a different level in every scene. PS Vinod’s camera work is perfect in his sepia tones and in other scenes where his lens is reflective of the mood of the film.
As conveyed by the team, the film is all about good and evil, but the interesting aspect here is the difficulty in choosing the sides. So, when the film comes to end, you still wonder which is black and which is white and realize that most of it falls in the gray realms.
The writing is brilliant and deserves all the plaudits. The film’s narrative structure follows a pattern of Vijay Sethupathi narrating a story to Maddy and it suits fine in most occasions. But there could be a few who might feel it a little odd when a police officer stops to listen to a story by a criminal at a crucial juncture of the investigation. This again is a minor niggle and does not appear huge in the larger scheme of things. Summing up, Vikram Vedha is a very cleverly written, engaging story, carried on by the superb performances of its cast members and supported best by the technical department.

VIKRAM VEDHA SONGS REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Album Release Date : Jun 19,2017 Karuppu Vellai
Singers: Sivam & Sam C S
Lyrics: Vignesh Shivn
Karuppu Vellai to start with is of the rock genre. It has the heavy guitar distortions and the attractive deep vocals of Sivam and composer Sam CS himself. It features the music that is heard in the Vikram Vedha teaser and is a serious song which talks about the outline of the film and preaches. Apart from guitars and the vocals, percussions also add to this track which ends on a slightly softer note after starting off with rock.
Yaanji Yaanji
Singers: Anirudh Ravichander & Shakthisree Gopalan
Backing Vocal: Sathiya Prakash
Lyrics: Mohanraj
A melody crooned by the versatile singers Anirudh and Shakthisree Gopalan. There is a mild use of autotune and Shakthisree sounds soothing yet stylish. Anirudh is at his usual good form and the tune is catchy and quite simple that makes it hummable. String instruments like Banjo and Harp have been used well and Yaanji Yaanji is a nice melodious track that is likeable by one and all.
Tasakku Tasakku
Singers: Mugesh, M L R Karthick, Guna And Chorus
Lyrics: Muthamil
This is an unusual folk based song. Sung by the whacky vocals of Mugesh, MLR Karthick and Guna, it is a proper situation based song that is on the lines of “Onnu Rendu” from Iraivi. Instruments used are majorly percussion oriented and the composer has played well with the vocals and the modulations. In fact, Vijay Sethupathi’s voice is also heard in between. It is a different and very innovative song.
Yethu Dharmam?
Chennai Orchestra
A complete instrumental by Chennai Orchestra, Yethu Dharmam is a high octane number. It has some really nice beats and a good fusion of guitars and Cello with a very superior mixing and mastering that enhances this track by Chennai Orchestra. It gives the Eerie feel as well.
Pogatha Yennavittu
Singers: Pradeep Kumar & Nega Venugopal
Lyrics: Sam C S
A beautiful song for the situation of love. Singer Pradeep Kumar who’s voice was magical in ‘Poo Avizhum’ sounds very impressive with Pogatha Yennavittu as well. It has some nice use of strings, Oud, flute and traces of violin as well. Nega Venugopal has a sweet voice and this compliments Pradeep’s beautiful vocals. Composer Sam CS has delivered a neat song in the melody genre. The latter half of the song is particularly beautiful as it has an emotional connect with the play of instruments.
Ghetto Chase
Singers: Meghavarshini, Avantika & Monisha
Chennai Orchestra
Ghetto Chase is a fast paced number sung by Meghavarshini, Avantika and Monisha and is a typical situation song that is proof that the movie can be expected to have a musical narrative. Again, the music from the teaser has been played well with. Chennai orchestra give another unique number with the use of instruments like Lute and Sarod which are Indian string instruments and also use synth to add a western flavour.
Idhu Emosion
Chennai Orchestra
Idhu Emosion, as the name suggests, is an emotion kindling song. It has also been composed by Chennai Orchestra and the backbone of this emotional number is the violin portions complimented well by the string usage. It is a very attractive instrumental piece.
Yethu Nyayam?
Singers: Sam C S
Chennai Orchestra
Yet another rendition by Chennai Orchestra for Vikram Vedha. Composer Sam CS has taken the route with an album majorly banking on instruments. Even though the track follows a certain pattern that is usually adapted by Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer, it seems fresh and could be apt for the story telling. It is a song that has a question attached to it and catering to this is the genre as well.
Sangu Sattham
Singers: Sethu Thankachan, Kannan M, Ravikumar
Sangu Sattham is a short stint by Sethu Thankachan, Kanna and Ravikumar. It has use of instruments like Madolin and Ukulele and a depth filled string usage throughout. It is another innovative attempt by Sam CS with quite some experimentation.
Oru Katha Sollatta?
Singers: Sam C S, Sethu Thankachan, Kannan M & Ravikumar
Chennai Orchestra
Yet another track in this album which is completely ruled by the orchestra and no lyrics. The Chennai Orchestra takes total control of the track with an expert usage of the strings and arranges a haunting score. Singers Sam C S, Sethu Thankachan, Kannan M & Ravikumar hum their bits with total robust rage.
