This ranking is not just specific to success and failure of the calendar year 2013. Careers of each director, starting from their first movie, are analyzed and compared against other directors on the basis of :
1. Current remuneration per movie
2. Hits delivered
3. Number of years in the industry as director
4. Fan following
5. Future projects
6. National recognition
Criteria for nomination :
1. Directors with a minimum of one straight Tamil movie release in 2013 (or)
2. Directors who have been signed for at least one future straight Tamil movie project
Bharathi raja
Walking into the industry with an impactful 16 Vayathinile, Bharathiraja took Tamil Cinema to another level altogether. Weaving out movies mostly set in rustic backdrops, the director has set a unique brand for himself.
Bhagyaraj
After camping with Bharathiraja in 16 Vayathinile and making effective contribution in the screenplay and dialogues departments, Bhagyaraj went on to be an independent director making exceptional movies like Mundhanai Mudichu, Chinna Veedu and Enga Chinna Rasa.
Balu Mahendra
The cinematographer and director Balu Mahendra made unforgettable movies such as Moondram Pirai and Veedu. His latest Thalaimuraigal that was released in 2013 was an ambitious attempt to take Tamil Cinema to the world.
Balachander
The legendary director is responsible for the creation of two other legends, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. His Aval Oru Thodar Kathai, Manmadha Leelai and Varumayin Niram Sigappu are a few special mentions in his long illustrious career.
