Director Ezhil is known for his comedy based family entertainers which have more or less worked well at the box-office too. He has worked with the biggest of stars such as Vijay and Ajith and also with upcoming stars such as Siva Karthikeyan.

Now he joins hands with Vemal, for Desingu Raja – a love story set in the midst of two warring villages with a long history of enmity and violence. Whether the romance is able to stand up to the raging familial rivalries is the finale of this tale, which moves along expected lines.

Comedy is a major part of the movie like in previous Ezhil movies and the likes of Parotta Soori, Chaams, Singam Puli, Singamuthu and even villain Ravi Maria have tried their best to tickle the funny bone.

The director makes sure that comedy is integrated even into the most serious of sequences. Such is his love affair with comedy! But, the climax becomes a total farce.

Soori reprises what Vadivelu used to do in countless movies a few years back, as the ‘comedy piece morai maman’. He is coming into his own as a lead comedian and his antics bring about quite a few laughters. His tryst with English words particularly reminds us of the ‘Vaigai Puyal’. Sample this, he says ‘bus night’ for ‘first night’ and there is more such English ‘gyaan’ which keeps flying all over the place.

Among the other comedians, the sprightly Singam Puli comes across as a true natural. Chams doesn’t get much to showcase his range.

Bindu Madhavi looks ravishing, alluring and one just wishes she gets a script which showcases her stylish side. Somehow we get the feeling that she is too attractive to pass off as a simple village belle. Bhanu appears for a dance number and she is full of beans.

Vemal does a role which he has performed countless times till date and we hope he makes his dialog diction livelier. Vinu Chakravarthy is back after a hiatus as Vemal’s grandfather and the veteran’s inimitable voice will be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for regular Tamil cinema audiences.

Imman’s songs such as ‘Ammadi Ammadi’, ‘Oru Ora Ora Paarva’ and ‘Pom Pom’ gave the movie a fair amount of pre-release buzz but on screen, there isn’t anything special to lift these good numbers higher. The background score also didn’t have anything special.

The cinematography by Suraj Nallusamy is par for the course and the visuals are what you would expect out of a typical village based movie.

On the whole, Desingu Raja doesn’t have much going for it as this blend of comedy, romance and family drama is one that has been done to death many times.

Verdict: A tried and tested romance-comedy formula
