Agni Natchathiram – Raja Rajathi
Raja
Singer: Ilayaraja
If anybody thought that Ilayaraja was the
king of melody, then it was time for them
to wake up to the fact that he could do just
about anything in music. Of course, he had
done a diverse variety of songs even before
Agni Natchathiram, with numbers like the ‘Nila
adhu vaanathu mele’ from Nayagan. But,
the Rajathi Raja number was special because
of the heavy and novel use of percussions.
It was a high energy song, rendered with power
by Ilayaraja himself and Mani Ratnam brought
it out on screen in a fitting manner. The
song was perhaps the mascot on which the film
rose to huge popularity. Of course, the entire
album was a huge success with Ilayaraja melody
specials like ‘Ninnu kori’ and
‘Thoongatha vizhigal’.
