In a scientific and high tech approach to apocalypse, a few film makers have envisaged the end of human race for the machines, built by the humans themselves, to take control over the earth. The basic thread can be traced back to the Terminator: Judgment Day series where Arnold travels back in time to save the future leader of the resistance against machines. It was carried forth in Terminator 3 where the race was against Skynet and Terminator Salvation continued the fight against the machine dominance.
