There are many brilliant comedians in Tamil cinema like JP Chandrababu, Nagesh, Thengai Srinivasan, Cho, Suruli Rajan, SV Shekhar, Goundamani, Senthil, Vadivel, Vivek, and more recently, Santhanam. Looking at this list, one will be forgiven for thinking that men have come to monopolize the field and edged out women entirely. But that is doing great injustice to female comedians who have excelled in tickling the funny bone and carved a niche for themselves in an industry where women have such limited roles to play – the younger ones are expected to get dolled up and send testosterone levels soaring or once they have crossed a certain age dutifully play the sister who gets raped and murdered or mothers who weep sorrowfully for the camera before getting killed themselves or watching their son get killed or daughter raped and weep some more. Surely it is time to eradicate sexism from Tamil cinema. Let us take a stand by honoring the top Comedy Queens of Tamil cinema in order to encourage others to follow in their footsteps.
