Udta Punjab, an upcoming Hindi film that features Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles has faced quite a big chunk of controversies. What started out as a statement, that references to Punjab must be avoided grew into a heavy storm with the issue casting a big doubt over the release of the movie.
While many fraternities from Bollywood expressed their support for Udta Punjab, reports suggest that political pressure also added to the growing troubles. A total of 89 cuts were suggested along with the suggestion that the language which included strong cuss words be toned down, but the makers of the movie refused to accept it.
This issue was later taken to the Bombay High Court who after hearing both the sides had issued a statement on the 10th of June stating, “The word censor is not anywhere in the act. Your power is to certify films for public exhibition.” Although this statement might have eased down the pressure for the makers, the official judgement was to be given today, the 13th of June.
Today the Bombay High Court has given a verdict ordering that the movie is to be released with just one cut and a refined declaimer. The High Court also ordered that the movie is to be given a new certificate within 2 days, after rejecting the plea for a stay from CBFC. We wish best of luck for the success of the movie. Stay tuned for more updates.
