Tamilnadu Film Producers Council has come up with an urgent statement a few minutes back. The press release says, "Tamil Film Producers are already facing loss in the trade due to various reasons including Piracy and GST. At this crucial situation, we are further shocked by the announcement (10% Entertainment Tax) made by Tamilnadu Government on 27th September 2017.
We had already explained the trade situation and have given a clear picture of the business through various petitions in our meetings with the State Government officials. But now, the government has come up with this taxation law instead of sorting out the ticket price hike issue. This has given us huge business loss and creates confusion internally.
So, we at TFPC met today with all producers and have come to a decision wholeheartedly. Tamilnadu Producers Council has now decided that there won't be new movie releases from October 6th, until the government sorts out the ticket hike issue and waives of the Entertainment Tax completely."
The move by the producer council might change plans for films like Solo and vizhithiru, who were scheduled to release this weekend. The bigger expectation will be on the Diwali Biggie Mersal which is just 15days away. We need to wait to know how big will this move affect the new releases and their plans. Watch out this space.
