Besides 'Metti Oli', Uma had acted in serials like 'Oru Kadhaiyin Kadhai' and 'Manjal Magimai'. Uma had also played the lead role in the 2002 Malayalam film 'Ee Bhargavi Nilayam'. In Tamil, she played notable roles in 'Vetri Kodi Kattu' (2000), 'Unnai Ninaithu' (2002) and 'Alli Arjuna' (2002).

The actress who was in the media field for 13 years, stayed away from the industry after marriage. Uma was battling illness for several days. She is survived by her husband Murugan who is a veterinarian. Uma Maheshwari was the young sister of actress Vanaja who played her elder sister in 'Metti Oli' too.  Sunitha is her younger sister.

While fans and celebrities are yet to come to terms with the news and are still processing the grief after her passing, a video that she recorded days before her death has been doing rounds on social media and is going viral. In the video, she talks about transwoman Jeeva who rose to fame with her role in Vijay Sethupathi's 'Dharma Durai'. She said that she saw a short film and was very happy to see her in it and encouraged her to pursue more such roles in the industry and garner great success in life. Jeeva had worked with Uma as her makeup artiste for some time before grabbing roles in films.
