The Indian film industry has come a long way from the point of its genesis and Tamil cinema is also not something to stay behind.
Today, the 31st October happens to be an important day in Tamil cinema as Kalidas, the first Tamil film with sound was released on this day in 1931 marking its 85th anniversary today.
Kalidas was directed by H M Reddy and produced by Ardeshir Irani. The film featured G Venkatesan as Kalidas and the great TP Rajalakshmi as the heroine who enjoys the special status of the first Tamil and Telugu film heroine, female director and producer in the South Indian cinema industry. Rajalakshmi was much ahead of her times and fought for the protection of girl child even then. She has acted in many plays, films and was a role model for many.
