April 16, 2016: Nandhitha Ramesh, a Chennai based fashion designer was chosen to
showcase her work at the 6th edition of India Runway Week at New Delhi, a three day
event held between April 15th – 17th. She was handpicked amidst several competitors for
the category “Budding Designer”, and was the only one from Chennai, to debut her new
label ‘Merasal’.
This maiden collection of Merasal featured elements of intricate temple architecture,
lotus flowers, parrots, elephants and other motifs that are typically associated with
Goddess Andal, interspersed with the contemporary stylings conceptualized by
Nandhitha. The silk sarees in the collection were woven by local artisans from
Sirumugai, a small village in Coimbatore, located on the banks of the river Bhavani. The
dresses featured in the collection play with different drapes, cuts and pleats in a mix of
linen, silk and light cotton fabrics.
Powerful. Bold brush strokes, daring explosions of colour and a splash of motifs that
draw inspiration from mythologies, epics, scriptures, cinema and nature melt deliciously
to form couture ensembles that reflect elements of joy, color and movement.

India Runway Week targeted individual and institutional buyers along with e-commerce
websites, to get business for participating designers. According to Avinash Pathania,
founder, Indian Federation for Fashion Development (IFFD), “IRW should be seen for
what it ought to be: an educational trade event where buyers and media get to see the
work of young designers. The whole idea is to get business and recognition for these
young designers. It’s not just another fashion week, it is a runway week, a platform for
fashion startups of India.”
After the launch of the brand, Merasal will be available in several retail outlets across
the country, as well as Turquoise Design Studio, located in Chennai.
About Nandhitha Ramesh:
Nandhitha Ramesh, is the founder of brand Turquoise Design Studio and designer label
‘Merasal’. After graduating from the London College of Fashion, she gave up the
corporate life in 2011 and started a small studio, Turquoise, aptly named after the
beautiful waters of Chennai’s beaches, located at a gemstone’s throw away from the
studio.
Perhaps Nandhitha’s collection of work best reflects her design philosophy – in that she
wants people to be intimidated by the women she dresses. Her designs are fierce.
