The actor had earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and subsequently, made a complete recovery. Vijaykant’s party currently aligns with the incumbent ADMK.

"It is the wish of our cadres that the DMDK leader Vijayakanth should be the king," Premalatha Vijayakant had earlier stated on the actor and politician’s birthday, a statement that didn’t go down well with many.

When asked if DMDK will face the upcoming state elections alone or go with any other party, Premalatha said that it’s too early for the polls, comfortable with a wait and decide approach.

"The DMDK is still in AIADMK's alliance. Premalatha's statement should not be construed as a rift in ties or weakening of the AIADMK. We are still a formidable force as we had been under the leadership of late M.G. Ramachandran or Jayalalithaa. The next assembly election will be fought under the AIADMK leadership," Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar had said in relation to Premalatha’s statements.
