Where ever you go, whoever you meet, the only discussion that your ears could listen to currently is about Superstar’s Kabali produced by Kalaipuli Thanu. It’s been quite a while since we saw a film garner such gargantuan level of expectation from all quarters. What started like a simple, very unlike Rajini film, has now turned out to be the most anticipated film of the year.
With just a few days away from Kabali’s theatrical release, the biggest achievement a Rajini fan could accomplish right now is to grab an FDFS ticket of Kabali. In Chennai, handful number of theatres has already opened bookings for the film, but the only reply that you get from the theatres is ‘HOUSEFUL’.
Chennai city is significantly a smaller area with just around 25 odd screens compared to Chengalpattu district. For the amount of buzz that Kabali has managed to create, it could easily give you more houseful shows even if it is being screened in all the theatres located at the Chennai city region.
Since Chennai city is one of the most systematic ones when it comes ticket price regulation, it is easy for us track a film for box office prospects for this particular region. Based on our detailed analysis, we have come up with the estimated opening day collection of Kabali at the Chennai box office.
According to our prediction, Kabali would approximately collect around 1.05 crores. This is just about the same number that Vijay’s Theri got. Theri was also produced by Thanu which released on April 14th for Tamil New Year’s day. But what needs to be noted here is Theri had a release issue at Chengalpattu district which created more demand for the film at Chennai, so it got as many theatres as it could, whereas for Kabali the demand is even more organic.
More importantly, Kabali is not being released on a festival day, unlike Theri, so the film can only be screened 4 times a day in one screen as it is being released on a working day. Multiplexes are very stringent with this practice and you could expect all shows at the multiplex only post 11.30 AM. However, few single screens have adjustable policies to screen 5 shows on such heavy demand days.
Our predicted figure does not include illegal price hike that few theatre authorities might follow to encash the unmatchable buzz of Kabali. The estimation also would not include any impromptu last minute premiere or special shows that are rumored to have been planned.
