Oliyum
Oliyum’s story is set
in the pre-independence era.
That is not to say that the
movie itself has got anything
to do with independence as a
whole. Except a few characters
that wish to enter into matrimony
only after independence, the
movie has no connection with
the era itself whatsoever..
The film is a flash back of
a woman’s life, who braved
her parents against wedding
before independence but only
eventually being deceived into
the act. She gives births to
numerous babies but none of
them survive. Her husband unravels
the mystery behind the deaths
and learns that she was killing
the babies, not wanting them
to be alive as slaves, before
independence. But one baby girl
survives and grows up with her
granny listening to her mother’s
story, who kills herself as
a way of punishing her husband.
The baby girl grows up to be
a young lady and swears to fulfill
her mother’s desire.

known and notable face. None of the actors
can emote any better than a log of wood
and hence the whole process looks trite.
Throw in some amateurish direction and dialogues,
above all some crass scenes that qualify
for more than just skin show, you get the
concoction called Oliyum Oliyum.
Director Sakthi Chellam’s earlier
credit includes Kiran Bedi’s Salute.
