A handful of debutants and a subject that has more than a touch of contemporary relevance should make for a movie that should at least pass muster. But Tharagu, for all the youth and energy that it brought on board looks a tame attempt at making a movie. Tharagu deals with the issue of brokerage and fraudulence in the real estate business: impostors selling properties that do not belong to them, large amounts of black money changing hands and the greed and treachery that it can bring along.

Debutant Sanjay plays a youngster who mediates real estate deals and makes neat sums as brokerage, he even does not mind passing off other people’s properties as his own and playing parts in other fraudulences. This is when he comes across Babylonia who owns some prime property in Chennai. She requests him to broker a property deal. He cleverly tricks Babylonia and makes off with the money, which is a pretty huge amount. It is almost at the same time that he meets Dimple (debut) who asks him to arrange a house for her family. A house is duly found and in course of time they fall in love and Sanjay trusts her with all his secrets and the huge amount of money. But there are a few surprises waiting in store for Sanjay.

The story is ordinary, the script is uninspiring and that is half the movie gone. Add to this, ordinary performances, a loose and dumb looking comedy track courtesy Vaiyapuri and Master Ganesh and execution that leaves a lot to be desired. You are left with a product that calls for some serious soul searching. One wonders why character actors like Rajan P. Dev and V.M.C. Haneefa have been wasted in such small roles. Music by Bharani has nothing worth mentioning.

On the whole, mediocrity runs rife throughout the film. The energy that we associate with debutants and youth is simply not there and the product is insipid.

Verdict: lethargic attempt
