If you have been waiting for something truly
different to hit the screens, then there
won’t be a better time for you to
be in theaters. It is a ‘Wild West’
meets ‘Tamil cinema’ moment
this Friday as Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam
(IKMS) makes it into theaters. We have enough
and more reasons to get excited by this
prospect. It has been 38 long years since
Tamil cinema ventured into cowboy territory
and it is being helmed by the man who has
made a name for himself as one adept at
satire and situational comedy. What that
promises is a unique amalgam of action and
comedy, something that is not so common
on screen these days. We have seen comedy
that borders on being violent (recount all
those times when Vadivelu or Vivek has been
beaten to pulp by a group of people) and
we have also had action that has often ended
up looking comical (the improbable gravity
defying type), but IKMS holds the promise
of mixing action and comedy in an entirely
new manner. |

It is difficult to put one’s finger on the genre
that this movie might belong to. For starters, since
it is being directed by the man who created Imsai Arasan
23 am Pulikesi, we can look forward to generous doses
of humor and satire. But, how can a ‘cowboy’
flick be devoid of action, especially the ‘guns,
girls and horses’ type which we adored in Clint
Eastwood starrers many years back. The cast throws a
few clues; that humor is definitely going to be on top
of the agenda for this film. We have Ilavarasu, M.S.
Bhaskar, Vaiyapuri and Mouli. When such actors are in
one movie, there is only one thing you can expect –
rip-roaring laughter. There is also Nasser looking quite
menacing, like a one-eyed jack, suggesting that he might
be playing the ‘bad cowboy’. And, there
are the three leading ladies, Padmapriya, Lakshmi Rai
and Sandhya. It will be interesting to see what they
get to do in a cowboy setting which is considered a
male dominion. And of course, there is the most important
part of any cowboy flick, the style. Gun flipping, horse
riding, hat twirling etc… are all things that
you would expect to see in IKMS. And, Simbudevan has
got just the right man to do that. Talk of style in
Kollywood and there is only one name that comes to mind,
Superstar. Well, this guy is not Superstar, but he certainly
did make Superstar look extra cool in the ‘Athiradee’
song of Sivaji. You can bet your money on Raghava Lawrence
going all out with his style for this movie. It will
also be very interesting to see what Manorama gets to
do in a movie of this kind.
IKMS comes with a great many highlights. It is understood
that with its cowboy theme, horse riding and stuff,
it definitely has to be a period feel. There are no
clues till now about where or when the story is set.
The entire cast, right from Lawrence to Sandhya has
undergone training in horse riding to look like real
cowboys. The entire movie has been shot on sets, which
is of course necessitated by the theme. And, the word
is that MS Bhaskar has taken pains to develop and entirely
new language which will be spoken by the tribals in
the movie. It is not just gibberish and funny sounds
that make no meaning. It is seriously a new language
with a complete vocabulary; something along the lines
of what James Cameron did while creating the Navi language
for Avatar.
From what we have seen till now, the movie will also
be a top notch technical effort. The producers have
reportedly spared no expenses to get just the right
feel for the movie. Music by G.V. Prakash is off the
beaten path and looks to be apt for the kind of movie
that IMS will be. All in all, IMS will be an experience
and an experiment to be remembered. It is not often
that a genre is revisited after a 38-year hiatus. Let
the cowboys rule. |
