Thyagarajan is reprising one of his blockbuster movies with son Prashanth, dropping the Malaiyoor from its title and making it just Mambattiyan. Malaiyoor Mambattiyan, released in 1983, sealed Thyagarajan's stature in the Tamil film industry as an unconventional hero making films in his own right. Malaiyoor Mambattiyan worked in 1983 because it had all the ingredients for a village action drama - a Robinhood of sorts, his abandonment from the society, his love and sentiments. Hopefully, Thyagarajan has refurbished the storyline to suit present audiences in the latest rendition.
Touted to be an action film, Mambattiyan is directed by Thyagarajan with Prashanth in the title role. Since the movie's lead character is said to be living in the forest, the film is extensively shot in dense forests in places like Kodanadu, Dindi, Kambam, Theni, Malaiyur, and in forest areas of Kochi and Andhra.
It was widely stated that Sneha will take up the lead role in Mambattiyan but for reasons unknown she wasn't in the film when it was launched. Meera Jasmine took the lead role playing the role of Saritha with Mumaith Khan reprising the role done by Jayamalini in the original. This will be Mumaith Khan's Tamil film after what seems like a long time. Mambattiyan also has Prakash Raj, Vadivelu, Riyaz Khan, Vijayakumar and Kota Srinivasa Rao in prominent roles.
Thaman's music has already generated enough curiosity with Silambarasan rendering a remix version of the famous title song 'Kaattuvazhi' from the original. Written and produced by Thyagarajan himself, the movie is releasing this weekend.
