It wasn’t long enough when gory and
audacious gangster-turned-hero movies made
a beeline at the cinema halls in Tamil Nadu.
When movies of this genre – for instance
Thoothukudi and Kokki – with less than
a shoestring budget made waves at the box
office, fans decided that they have had enough
of their share of carnage onscreen.

As a result, the trend saw a sudden transformation when
movies with refreshing storylines hit the screens soon
after. Paruthiveeran, Mozhi, Naan Avanillai and the latest
release Karupasamy Kuthagaithaarar are to name a few.
However, as it seems, gangsters haven’t completely
abandoned Tamil cinema. Only that they are spruced up
with the latest gadgets and gizmos this time around. In
the pipeline are Billa 2007, Bheema, Kaalai and Pollathavan
that are necessarily of this genre. Well, what goes around
comes around, said someone fittingly.
