Year 2010 has been a booming year for Tamil cinema with 150 films hitting the screens. This is the highest ever in the history of Tamil cinema, says industry trade pundits. According to ‘Film News’ Anandan, “It is a landmark year in the history of Tamil cinema with 150 straight releases and 42 dubbed releases. On the face of it, our cinema is booming, but 95 per cent of these films have been produced by new production houses which have come up in the last three years. Veteran producers have gone into a shell as filmmaking has changed drastically.”
However, the situation has not been that bright at the box office as only a handful of films managed to garner profits while the rest faded away after a few shows. The industry is eagerly waiting to find out what 2011 has in store for them with a slew of big budget films lined up for release.
