Kalloori
– Music Review |
|
The
duo of Balaji Shaktivel and Joshua Sridhar are back after
their successful and path breaking venture Kaadhal. The movie
which captured the rustic flavor of Madurai, launched the
entry of Joshua Sridhar as a music composer of substance.
They have come together again for a story that revolves around
the happenings in a college set in the 80s.
June July maatham – Krish and Suchitra
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar

|
|
|
A
melodious number that starts off with some peppy beats is about
friendship between a couple and their association with the college
where it blossomed. Excellent work by lead singers Krish and Suchitra,
a refreshing change for her from the high pitched numbers she
has been singing of late. Na. Muthukumar’s lyrics spell
nostalgia and Joshua has recreated music of the era in his own
inimitable style with subtle use of digital beats and rhythm reminiscent
of those times.

Sariya
Idhu Thavara – Haricharan
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
The pallavi of the song reminds you of his Kaadhal number
‘Thottu Thottu’, but the saranam slowly meanders
to a tune ala Ilayaraja. The beats are fast, the violin and
flute interludes are awesome, though the overall rhythm pattern
sounds a little familiar. Haricharan has come up with some
soulful rendition.

Unnarugil
Varugayil - Harini Sudhakar, Haricharan
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
An interesting fusion of 80’s style and digital mixing of
fast beats in the background lending it a unique quality, reminiscent
of the disco era. Haricharan and Harini’s voices add to the
feel of the song, the overlapping of their voices elevates the song
with the music dilly dallying between techno beats and disco rhythms.
Na.Muthukumar scores again this time with his stylized lyrics.

Vandanam
Ayya Vandanam - Thyagu, Ramesh, Logu
Lyrics: Thyagu, Ganesh, Prakash
A typical rural koothu, ‘college guys on the rampage’
song inside a town bus. The song that narrates the anecdotes
of college students recited in ‘villu paatu’ style
to the tunes of popular film songs of that time period. It
is meant to instill nostalgia among those who grew up on movies
and songs of that era. Its Joshua Sridhar all the way who
lends the ethnic feel required for the song.

Kalloori
Theme - Haricharan
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
The theme spells romance and nostalgia in every note. It starts
off with guitar and flute jugalbandi and slowly introduces a violin
piece that takes the listener to a different level altogether. The
sudden interjection of Haricharan’s voice bolstered by chorus
transcends genres and leaves you ecstatic. A mind blowing composition,
to say the least
Verdict:
Joshua Sridhar has completely redeemed himself with some amazing
tunes, successfully recreating the music of the 80’s that
was dominated by Ilayaraja, in a style of his own, which is no ordinary
feat. Balaji Shaktivel couldn’t have asked for a better curtain
raiser.
