Billa
- Music Review By

|
“I
am back”, signs off Ajith in the trailer. He sure
is back, and back in style, with all the hype and hoopla
that he is getting from the media. Now to the bigger
question, will Yuvan help him in his endeavor with some
good music? Let’s find out.
Sei Ethavathu - Neha Bhasin, Preethi
Balla
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
The song starts off through some techno beats with Arabic
overtones.

|
|
|
Highlight
remains Neha and Preethi’s voices, guess Yuvan’s
gotten hooked on to her voice after the success of Pesugiren
from Sathum Podathey, their previous collaboration. Seems
like the song which Helen performed in the Hindi original,
Yeh Mera Dil, not in tune but in situation. The best part
is the bass guitar and lead guitar interludes. Layering
on tunes gives more depth to Pa.Vijay’s lyrics.

Naan
Meendum - Deepika
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
A dampener of sorts, it has pretty familiar rhythm to
it and the loops seem a mish mash of sorts with the
theme tune brought in midway. The subtle percussions
in the interludes, bongos supposedly, make it interesting.
The song has some great high scale violin work but the
accompaniments camouflage the underlying raw beats.
A bit too eclectic, Pa.Vijay’s lyrics don’t
do much to elevate the song either.

Vethalaiya
Pottendi - Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Yuvan’s attempt at remixing a classic, starts of with
a DJ style scratch mixing of the tunes and slowly transforms
into a kuthu number with Shankar Mahadevan easily at his recent
best trying to replicate the magic of the original rendered
by Malaysia Vasudevan. With some great foot tapping beats,
the song has everything for the masses. If the team can back
it up with some solid onscreen performance, rest assured of
Ajith’s fans gate crashing the theatres for this number.
Kannadasan’s lyrics lend credibility and instill nostalgia
in the listener.

Saeval
Kodi – Vijay Yesudas, chorus
Lyrics: Pa. Vijay
A Fast paced number banking heavily on the folk flavor
and Pa. Vijay’s peppy lyrics. Impressive use
of local beats; most probably the intro song for the
Rajappa character. Vijay Yesudas’s voice adds
some zeal to this song that is full of energy. Another
number all set to rock Ajith’s fans.
My name is billa – Kay Kay,
Naveen
Lyrics: Kannadasan
The most expected song of the album leaves a lot to
be desired. The coarseness and the thump in the original
are missing. This is one song which will depend directly
on some onscreen magic.
|
|
|
|
The
song also seems to have subtle instrumentation which might be
lost on ordinary audio systems. Kay Kay and Naveen have tried
hard to do a SPB, not a bad attempt on their part. You seldom
hear M.S.Viswnathan’s voice that is credited in the album
for this song. Yuvan has ended up softening the song too much.
Parts where the song sticks to the original tune without any
mixing makes you realize the appeal the original would have
had or still continues to have.

Theme
– Yuvan Shankar Raja
The soul of the film!
Stands out as the highlight of the album, giving that
eerie feel required of a film about a don. Interesting
composition with arrangements that spell international
quality from mixing to the mood it creates. Watch out
for the fabulous guitar.

|
|
Verdict:
Yuvan has tried his best to match up to the expectation, but
perhaps the asking is of very high order. If you are looking
for another peppy and groovy album from the young music director,
you have it, but for those looking for variety music it might
tad disappoint. With songs which seem to be more situational,
it will depend a lot on the visuals, director Vishnu will
have to offer.
